Buffalo City Metro Municipality together with On point hosted the inaugural annual Aerobics Marathon at the Orient Theatre on Saturday.

The event, which aims to promote healthy lifestyles and teach new, fun ways of working out, attracted more than 500 fitness enthusiasts who participated in various high impact exercises .

Led by professional instructors in HI LO, Kata Box, Step, Functional and Zumba, the event was attended by children as young as four, right up to veterans aged 67.

Event organiser Luvo Clive Sihlali said he was very pleased with the turnout, and that the event had been a huge success. Sihlali said the numbers proved that a lot of people were starting to be health conscious. He said the event’s main aim, which was to teach people that aerobics did not always have to be in a gym or indoors, had been achieved.

“ I am very happy and proud to have pulled the event off. Everything went smoothly and we did not receive any complaints. I am also particularly happy with the turnout, considering that this is the first time of hosting the event ‘’ said Sihlali

In addition, the event had a prize-giving ceremony, where the top three male and female in the youth, adult and veteran categories won medals and trophies.

Fitness enthusiast Mihlali Ngoqo who attended said: “The marathon was so much fun, going to gym is always such a drag for me. I not only had a great workout session today but I also learnt new exercises that I can do by myself at home. We definitely need more events like these in our city,” she said

BCM Sport Councilor Kuhle Ciliza said: “We are very pleased to host the event and be one of the sponsors. We as BCM feel that such an event can inspire the youth as well, and we hope the gathering will expand more.”

Sihlali said they were looking to host Aerobic Marathons across the eight municipal districts and then one massive Eastern Cape Marathon. He added that East London should look out for the next marathon early next year. — qaqambam@dispatch.co.za
