Just two years into the ABC Motsepe League, Tornado FC left back Nhlakanipho Myeza has earned himself a national call-up ahead of the U20 international friendly against Kenya on Saturday.

The 19-year-old who jetted off to Johannesburg yesterday to join the team was ecstatic, saying he did not expect the call-up, at least not now.

But nevertheless it was an indication of bigger things to come and a step towards the realisation of his dream to the big league – the PSL.

Myeza cemented his place in the fullback position on the left for Tornado last season when he featured in all their 30 league matches.

And they conceded just less than 20 goals.

“I was surprised that I am called up for national duty because I did not think they take notice of players in the amateur leagues but I guess hard work will never go unnoticed,” said Myeza.

Confident as ever, he is not going to Jozi to add numbers.

The Durban-born youngster, whose ambition is to see himself in the colours of Orlando Pirates within the next three years, said he was ready to impress Amajita coach Thabo Senong and earn his first starting berth for the national team.

Tornado head coach Thobela “King” Bikwani was full of praise for his charge, saying he knew from day one that Myeza was destined for success in the beautiful game.

“I actually did not believe that SuperSport United a player of his calibre go from their development ranks,” said Bikwani.

Myeza was campaigning in the colour of Matsatsantsa aPitori junior ranks before joining the Mdantsane-based side.

“This young man since last season to this day is among our star performers at Tornado and honestly I think this should be his last season in this league.” — zingisam@dispatch.co.za
