The much anticipated Multichoice Diski Challenge will this coming weekend invade Mdantsane’s Sisa Dukashe Stadium for the first time in the competition’s three year history.

With four matches lined up for the Saturday and Sunday soccer feast, the Eastern Cape’s Chippa United reserve side locks horns with Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday at 1pm.

In-form Downs are favourites to emerge victors. They are settled at the log summit on 21 points with just a single loss from eight outings.

The Chilli Boys on the other hand have been blowing hot and cold this season with three wins, two draws and three losses.

But with the support they are expected to enjoy as the home side, they may well cause an upset. Chippa coach Glen Minnie believes they have what it takes to beat Sundowns, especially following a confidence-boosting 1-0 win against Chiefs last Saturday.

“We are working really hard and I can say we are ready for Sundowns who will not be an easy side at all but we are slowly getting there,” said Minnie.

“We will be out to improve on our Chiefs performance where we showed we are an improving side.”

This encounter will be a homecoming of sorts for Minnie who cut his coaching teeth in East London.

He has promised the football loving people of East London nothing but an exciting brand of football.

“I am excited about coming back to East London, in particular Sisa Dukashe which holds a very special place in my heart for several reasons.

“When I was coaching Shiloh in the Buffalo City Regional League, I never lost a game at Sisa Dukashe and I can only strive to keep that record intact.’’

Minnie had an impressive record during his coaching days in Buffalo City, especially during the 2013-14 SAB League season that he won as mentor to Shiloh.

On Saturday, proceedings will start in earnest at 11am when Platinum Stars take on Bloemfontein Celtic.

“Siwelele” are clear favourites to scoop maximum points as they too, unlike their battling Premier League opponents, have had a splendid season so far.

They lie second, four points behind log leaders Downs while their opponents, Dikwena, are struggling in 13th place with just seven points from eight matches, including a staggering five losses.

This match will be followed by an encounter between SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates at 1pm. The latter are eighth on the standings while the former are languishing in 14th place with just a victory, a draw and six defeats.

The big one on Sunday will be preceded by Maritzburg United who collide with Kaizer Chiefs at 11am.

Placed at position four and seven respectively with four wins apiece thus far this season, this is a close call but recent form leans the way of United as they played to a 3-3 draw against Dikwena last Sunday.

A press conference to be attended by the Buffalo City Municipality and Chippa will take place at the Grazia Fine Food & Wine Restaurant at 11am today. — zingisam@dispatch.co.za
