Chippa United’s reserve side have vowed to “rise to the occasion” when they meet Multichoice Diski Challenge (MDC) log-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium.

This was said by Chilli Boys mentor Glen Minnie during a press conference in East London yesterday.

The mission, said Minnie, was to continue on a positive note following their 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs last weekend and push for championship.

Winning the MDC championship guarantees the champions a lifetime opportunity in the form of a trip to the Netherlands.

In this regard Chippa, currently 11th will look to kickstart their title chase against Sundowns on Sunday afternoon where they will be going for maximum points.

Minnie though emphasised that results had to be linked with the production of future Premier League players which was the primary objective of the competition.

“We will push for championship as hard as we can but we got to take it one game at a time,” he said.

“However we need to balance results with producing players because that is the aim of this competition and people need not forget about that.”

The Eastern Cape outfit, who will be banking on homeground advantage, got good luck messages from the provincial department of sport, recreation, arts and culture (DSRAC).

DSRAC spokesman Andile Nduna said they were hoping that the young Chilli Boys will be as “hot as peri-peri” on Sunday.

“First and foremost we are excited that the MDC is finally coming to the eastern side of the province for the first time since formation,” said Nduna.

As the department, they were hoping that sport tourism in the metro and province receives a major boost.

“We must commend the municipality for working hard and around the clock in ensuring that the doubts that were there about the stadium at first were attended to ... but we always knew that the MDC was going to come to Mdantsane.

“In this regard we wish Chippa United well and hope that they will make the people of the Eastern Cape very proud.”

Chippa captain Yurigg Conwood warned the in-form Downs against complacency.

Conwood said: “Sundowns must work very hard to get three points against us, it is not going to be easy because we are in it to win it.”

MultiChoice will be conducting an activation event in Mdantsane tomorrow and Friday.

MDC ambassador and former Kaizer Chiefs midfield magician Jabu “Shuffle” Mahlangu will be giving away tickets at the Mdantsane City Mall.

Entry to the two-day festival will be free of charge. — zingisam@dispatch.co.za
