The Warriors and BuildNat Cape Cobras had to settle for a share of the spoils after their Sunfoil Series match came to its inevitable conclusion at Buffalo Park yesterday afternoon.

After a day and a half of play was lost due to a combination of rain, a wet outfield and bad light, a draw was the most likely result and proved to be so after the Warriors were bowled out for 260 just before lunch, 31 runs behind the Cobras first innings total of 291 runs all out.

The Cobras then made their way to 71/3 shortly before tea when the umpires called play for bad light and the captains decided to shake hands on a draw at that point.

This was the Warriors second rain-affected draw in a row and sees them stuck fifth on the table but still well in the hunt with three matches remaining in the competition.

“It is one of those frustrating periods in the season. Fortunately we are still in it points wise, we just need to win at least two of our last three games and hope some results go our way,” said Warriors coach Malibongwe Maketa.

“We haven’t been as consistent as we would like to be in all disciplines but I thought we were much better in the field and I feel we are slowly but surely making gains in terms of building pressure as a unit.”

After a full day’s play on Thursday, only 42.3 overs were possible on day two and day three was called off completely due to a wet outfield.

This meant the Warriors resumed their first innings on 175/5 yesterday with Yaseen Vallie on 56 and Clyde Fortuin on zero, having not faced a ball yet.

The pair got off to a solid start and shared in a positive 66-run stand as they looked to haul in the Cobras total.

However Proteas spinner Dane Piedt had other ideas and started the slide by trapping Fortuin in front LBW for 29.

Simon Harmer (5) was then run out when Vallie attempted a quick single, with Aviwe Mgijima swooping on the ball and sending it to keeper Dane Vilas to break the stumps with Harmer short of his ground.

Vallie just six short of what would have been a well deserved century then edged one from Piedt which bounced and spun, with Vilas doing the rest behind the stumps.

Andrew Birch (7) and Basheer Walters (2) then became Piedt’s third and fourth victims as the Warriors were bowled all out having lost their last five wickets for 23 runs.

Piedt with 4/64 was the pick of the bowlers and was almost unplayable on the day taking four of the five wickets to fall.

The Cobras then came in to bat but just two balls were bowled before lunch was taken as Birch bowled a superb in-swinger to splatter Simon Khomari’s stumps, out for a second ball duck.

After lunch Stiaan van Zyl looked positive, but was caught at mid-wicket by Koopman off a leading edge for 14 with the Cobras on 14/2.

Andrew Puttick and Justin Ontong then steadied the ship, before Puttick chanced his arm against Simon Harmer and was caught by Colin Ackermann for 22, with the match then meandering to its close.
