School homeboys up against test of wills

Top schools’ water polo action is on the cards this weekend as the 41st annual Vides Waterpolo Tournament is battled out at Selborne College over three days.

The best water polo schools from across the Eastern Cape as well as a number of good teams from around the country will be taking part.

“I am expecting the Eastern Cape Schools to do very well. Selborne, St Andrew’s and Grey PE have traditionally done extremely well in this tournament and I believe they will be the main contenders again,” said tournament organiser Mike Cousins.

The last six winners of the Vides has been split between the three teams, with St Andrew’s as defending champions after beating Selborne in the final last year, while they also won in 2014 and 2013.

Selborne broke St Andrew’s hold with a great win in 2015, while Grey have not won the tournament since they claimed the double in 2011 and 2012, so they will be eager to get back on top again.

Earlier this week a late pull out from Paul Roos meant a replacement side had to be found, but that did not prove to be a problem and all is set for an exciting few days of water polo.

“Paul Roos were coming but they had a measles outbreak at their school and had to pull out, which was unfortunate, but we have brought in Grey PE seconds to fill that spot and are still in for a great weekend of action,” said Cousins.

Most of the other teams playing in the tournament come from East London and Port Elizabeth schools. However, a few from Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape will also be in attendance.

“What we are looking for really is a festive and competitive tournament, where we can promote water polo in our Eastern Cape schools especially,” said Cousins.

“We do have schools like St Albans and Crawford from Johannesburg and St Charles from Pietermaritzburg playing, but we are really wanting to provide an avenue where Eastern Cape schools can compete at the highest level.”

A change to this year’s tournament has seen it move from a two-day to a three-day event.

The last few years has seen the action take place from Friday and end with the final on Saturday evening, but this year sees the action continue on to Sunday afternoon, when the final will be held.

“We are playing the main match on Sunday and are hoping we will see more people come out just after lunch to see the final,” said Cousins.

The action gets under way on Friday morning.
