The 2017 Buffalo Regatta got off to the perfect start yesterday as school teams from around the country battled it out to qualify for the finals tomorrow.

Heated action saw all teams vying for top position, which in most events guaranteed progress to the finals.

Some of the most exciting racing happened late in the afternoon, with the final two races being the men’s first eights heats.

As always, they were fiercely fought, ending with South African College School (Sacs) and St Andrew’s College taking the heat honours, which should see an interesting battle in tomorrow’s final.

Overall, on the boys side of the draw, it was St Albans College and St Andrew’s who impressed most, claiming the most top finishes on the day.

St Albans claimed 12 first place finishes, along with four seconds, and seven thirds to finish in the top three.

St Andrew’s was close behind with 10 first places, five seconds and five thirds – for 20 top-three finishes.

Bishops and St Benedicts, with six first places each, and Rondebosch Boys, with five, also enjoyed a good day of rowing.

Nearly proving to be the team of the day, Grey High School, who claimed three first places, with nine seconds and nine third place finishes – always seemed to be in the running but just couldn’t take the top spot.

Selborne College found themselves up against some very tough opposition but will contest a few finals tomorrow after taking one first place, two seconds and three thirds on the day.

On the girls front, four schools stood out, with St Mary’s enjoying the best day, followed closely by St Andrew’s Girls, Clarendon Girls High and Holy Rosary.

St Mary’s claimed 11 first place finishes on the day, with four seconds and four thirds, while St Andrew’s Girls took seven firsts, 11 seconds and two thirds. Clarendon had a top day with five first places, five seconds and six thirds and can look forward to a number of finals tomorrow.

“We had some decent results, through to quite a few finals which is great and the girls enjoyed themselves,” said Clarendon rowing coach Bill Godfrey.

“Today was a phenomenal day ... there was no wind and it was just a pleasure to row in these conditions. Hopefully the next two days are similar.”

Holy Rosary, the fourth-best top performers on the girls side, managed two firsts, two seconds and six thirds.

Today sees the Selborne sprints regatta taking place.

The extremely popular and exciting day of racing sees the crews battling it out over 500m and plenty of close races and photo-finishes are expected.

The day is dominated by school teams but six university crews will be in action and those events will be eagerly anticipated.

The day gets under way at 6am today and the final races are scheduled to take place from 5.30pm.
