Women's golfing action kicks into high gear at the East London Golf Course tomorrow as the annual Border Women’s Strokeplay Championship tees off.

Some of the country’s top amateur women golfers will have a go at the championship.

Despite having a decent field Border Ladies Golf president, Wendy May was still not that impressed with the draw.

“We have a disappointing field of only 35 players, as this is a rated tournament with WGSA ,” said May.

“It is over 54 holes and the girls score points for the ranking order with WGSA.

“We have some good players competing though and I am expecting an exciting competition between the top players that are coming.”

In the A division Woo-Ju Son will be one of the leading contenders.

The Country Club Johannesburg Golfer, who is ranked fifth on the amateur standings, has had three top 10 finishes in tournaments so far this year with her best a fifth at the Tshwane Open at the start of the month.

She is coming off a 10th place finish at the Eastern Province Championship this past week, so she will want to improve on that.

Sarah Bouch, ranked ninth in the amateur rankings will also be aiming for a good tournament and she also comes off a 10th place finish alongside, Son at the EP Champs.

The main threats on the local front will be 2015 Border Champs winner, Zethu Myeki and Demi Flanagan, who will both be aiming to impress in their home tournament.

Other golfers to watch will be Larissa du Preez, Switzerland’s Cloe Grand, currently playing out of Kenako Academy in George, Chante van Zyl, Bianca Wernich, Brittney-Fay Berger, Tara Griebenouw and Crystal Beukes.

In the B division Ciara Koekemoer from Burgersdorp will be one of the players to watch and she comes off a good win in the B division of the EP Match Play champs earlier this week.

“Ciara did very well in PE and I think she will do well here as well,” said May.

She should receive a stiff challenge from Simone Ferreira from Port Shepstone.

In the C division Judy Hoefnagels and Leigh Beckerling, who both play out of Belmont, the new course in Grahamstown, will be the ones to keep an eye on.

Following the Strokeplay champs, which is set to finish on Sunday afternoon, the Border closed matchplay champs will take centre-stage on Monday and Tuesday, which will see Border players exclusively battling it out for matchplay honours.

“This is a closed championship and the top Border players will be playing against each other here,” said May.

The action gets under way early tomorrow morning.
