Third tier Bhisho outfit, EC Bees have turned their attention to the club’s biggest ever game, this weekend, against Orlando Pirates in a Nedbank Cup last 32 showdown.

Bees will battle it out with the Soweto giants at Sisa Dukashe Stadium (kick-off 3pm) in Mdantsane on Sunday.

Much to the technical team’s credit, the ABC Motsepe League side did not get ahead of itself and continued to win in the league as they chase a spot in the National First Division next season.

Bees are second on the log with 50 points from 21 games – a point behind leaders Future Tigers.

They did, however, suffer their first defeat this season against unlikely opponents in Swartkops Valley United Brothers – a result that stunned most.

This is the second consecutive year that Bees have made it to the Ke Yona last 32, but this year they will be eager to qualify for the last 16 by claiming the former African champions’ scalp, in what will surely be a David versus Goliath clash.

Will it be a repeat of the Bible story with the underdogs claiming what looks like an unlikely victory over the Buccaneers?

Anything is possible, said Bees assistant coach Mokete Tsotetsi.

Tsotetsi, who played against the Sea Robbers in the Soweto derby and for Bloemfontein Celtic, will have prepared the players very well for what to expect from Kjell Jonevret’s men.

“It’s a motivation to the boys to be playing against such a big team. It’s not going to be easy for Pirates.

“Most people will be surprised by the squad that we have,” he said.

Win or lose, Bees go into the game with no expectations from the soccer fraternity and as underdogs – something that they can turn into an advantage and stun the Premier League team, as they are a closed book to them.

The hosts will also be motivated by the fact that other teams will be watching – and a decent showing for any of the players might see them snatched up by either a National First Division or PSL team.

Tsotetsi called on Eastern Cape soccer-loving people to fill up the stadium.

“We are not going there because this is a fixture we have to honour or add numbers. We will compete against Pirates and just like any other team going into a game, we are going with a winning mentality.

“The supporters must come out in numbers and support the home team. They must come see the talent that we have,” he said.
