While EC Bees failed to gain promotion to the National First Division (NFD), one of their strikers, the lethal Bongani Chikila had a superb season, netting an impressive 25 times in the ABC Motsepe League this season.
The former Jomo Cosmos man won the top goalscorer’s award after leading the Crazy Gang to 23 victories on their way to being crowned the ABC Motsepe League champions in the Eastern Cape.
Chikila was again on target four times in the ABC Motsepe playoffs but his proven goalscoring abilities could not help the Bhisho-based side to the second tier league next season.
While the team’s season ended on a sour note, Chikila said he was happy to have done his job – score goals.
“I’m grateful for everything that I have achieved this season and it is thanks to my teammates and everyone, who supported me from day one,” said the humble player.
Chikila dedicated the award to his fellow players, who he said are equally deserving of the honour.
The Crazy Gang dominated its provincial opponents almost in every game they played this season, losing only two times.
Chikila said he plans to polish his skills for the upcoming season as his team showed confidence in his style of play.
“I’m going to work on my finishing. That’s the most important thing right now for me because when your teammates believe in you, you must be clinical in the box,” he said.
Chikila said he always had hunger to score goals and the competition between strikers and defenders in his team also motivated him to take chances.
The Bloemfontein-born top goalscorer attributes his success to his management and family.
“This would not have been possible without all my coaches, the boys (teammates), my agent Xolisile Choleti, my mentor Dingani Moholo and lastly my mother without her none of this would be possible,” he said.
Although Chikila was disappointed his team had not gained promotion to the NFD, he remained optimistic: “This was an opportunity to learn and I can confidently say we gained a lot of knowledge from the whole experience. We just need to dust off our shoulders go back to the drawing board and come back stronger.”
