In a major fillip for football in the region, Chippa United chairman Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi yesterday announced that the inaugural Premier’s Cup match between Kaizer Chiefs and Chippa will become an annual event.
Mpengesi confirmed this at a press conference held at East London City Hall yesterday afternoon, saying that a partnership with the provincial government had been reached to see both PSL heavyweights clash in the metro this time of the season going forward.
He said this time around Chilli Boys have brought players that management thinks they will make the team tough to beat.
“We don’t want to be in the same situation where we started well but ended up fighting for survival.
“We are going to use this opportunity to also make the people of the province feel attached to this club,” said Mpengesi.
He said it’s game on but also on a serious note, claimed they don’t want to see a repeat of the incident during the recent Carling Black Label Cup where two fans died during a stampede and more than 10 supporters sustained injuries.
“We are ready and we have enough security personnel, and fake tickets will be monitored closely,” he said.
Mpengesi thanked the Buffalo City Metro for hosting the team and the provincial government for being involvement with this cup competition.
“Now are a club that belongs to every person in the Eastern Cape and thank you to premier Phumulo Masualle for using this platform to market the province because football is one of the biggest marketing tools.
“To bring Chiefs here which is one of the biggest clubs in Africa is an honour for us and I’m told it’s the first time they will play in Mdantsane so we looking forward to this game.”
Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs’ corporate communications manager Vina Maphosa said that they will score at least three goals during their clash at the Sisa Dukashe in Mdantsane tomorrow.
Maphosa was very confident even though he didn’t want to take credit from the Chilli Boys.
“We are coming here to play football and unite the people and to do all other things that improve. We are honoured to be part of this initiative,” said Maphosa.
Maphosa said the Chilli Boys were a solid organisation, hence they agreed to this event.
“We have bolstered our squad and we might have to use this game to throw in a few surprises. You saw glimpses of our excellence and playing Chippa is not a small game.
“When we play Chippa we prepare like we are going to a wedding. We want to bring our A game as we have Paez and Parker on fire.
“We don’t have time for penalties we want to win the game during the 90 minutes.”
Chilli Boys’ midfielder Mark “Professor” Mayambela said the relationship with Chippa motivated him to return to the PE-based club and he wanted to show his appreciation during the match by doing what he does best.
“I want to do well on the field to show my gratitude to the chairman. I also want to win silverware for the team.”
Kaizer Chiefs’ vice-captain Siphiwe Tshabalala said the most important task for the Naturena side is to win.
“We are happy to participate in this cup especially against a team like Chilli Boys and we aim to win this game.”
The match kicks off tomorrow afternoon at 3pm, while the gates open at noon.
