Cyclists  are gearing up for another crack at the popular Daily Dispatch Cycle Tour Race which is set to light up next weekend when it is battled out from Buffs Club.

The annual race which draws some of the province’s best cycling talent, as well as a number of big teams to take part, is already being hyped this year as one of the biggest and most exciting editions to date.

“The Daily Dispatch is thrilled to once again bring a bigger and better Cycle Tour to our city,” claimed Daily Dispatch acting marketing manager Penelope Smith.

“Not only do we offer a road race that is one of the only in the country to offer full road closure, but also great prize-monies and lucky draw items.

“Judging by online entries, this year promises to be an epic ride and we look forward to seeing lots of new faces as well as our faithful supporters of the race.”

The Road Race, which is a Cape Town Cycle Tour seeding race, offers various distances with full road closure route, starting at Buffs Club, heading up NEX, towards the Gonubie off-ramp and back on the N2 highway towards the Blaney turn-off and back to Buffs Club.

The main event will as always be the 102km epic, which will see the best in the business in action, with plenty of thrills and spills expected to delight over the race. The shorter, but just as competitive 50km race will also be back, along with the more relaxed fun, family orientated 19km ride, which does also bring out some exciting racing among the juniors usually.

Prize-money for this year’s race has been upped with the winner of the 102km race, for men and women, receiving R7000, while the runner-up bags R5000 and third place will get R3000.

As always R1000 will also go to the king and queen of the mountain and for the first time this year a new category is being launched called the Ultimate Challenge which will award R1000 for both the man and woman who gets the best time from both the 2017 Daily Dispatch Mountain Bike Challenge and Road Race.

In terms of the new CSA rules, prize-money may only be paid to cyclists with a domestic racing licence (Professional CSA racing licence).

This year the race is being timed by Racetec and as such all riders must have an official Racetec timing chip to be timed for the race.

Racetec will be selling timing chips for R150 at registration.

Entries for this year’s race are available at all local cycling stores, as well as online at www.dispatchcycletour.co.za and will by open until midnight next week Wednesday.

Spectators are welcome to enjoy the race from the start to finish.
