In perfect weather conditions for cycling, close to 400 cyclists turned out to take part in the 2017 Daily Dispatch Cycle Tour race at Buffs Club yesterday morning.

Three distances were battled out on the day, the main 102km race, the 50km ride and the 19km fun cycle.

This year a host of top teams took part in the race, including the Giants team, Rand Water Transnet from Cape Town, the BCX team from Johannesburg and the Bestmed NMU team from Port Elizabeth.

“The quality of riders taking part this year was fantastic,” said race director Antoinette Harding.

“Even our youngsters are up-and-coming, and are getting better, and our school groups are growing, which is exciting to see.

“We can only hope that this will encourage more top riding teams to come and get involved, and I think it can grow into an even bigger race.”

An entertaining prize-giving was enjoyed by most of the riders and supporters, where the top performers were rewarded for their hard work, and plenty of lucky draw prizes were also handed out.

“It was an absolutely amazing day; we were so happy to see the number of riders who took part, as well as the amazing support shown by the fans,” said acting Daily Dispatch marketing manager Penny Smith.

“I would like to thank all of our sponsors for their amazing contribution to the race; without them we would not have been able to pull this off, and we hope to work with them for many years to come.”

In all it was a fantastic day out and everyone seemed to enjoy the cycling action.

“The vibe was good, the people loved the route and we received some lovely feedback, so it was great,” added Harding. See Page 18 for race report. Race results will be in tomorrow’s Dispatch.
