Birmingham City seemed to have found their mojo after they embarrassed Manchester Babes 10-0 during their Sasol League encounter over the weekend at the Wolfson Stadium in Port Elizabeth.
Reacting to the result, City coach Bulelwa Khumalo said her side was more focused on getting back to their winning ways and they were the better side on the day to have scored as many goals as they did.
“We were mentally and physically prepared for this game and because we have not been ourselves lately due to a number of issues the team is faced with like the shortage of goalkeepers, we have pulled up our socks.
“We don't have goalkeepers in the team, the two keepers we had had other commitments as they are also working so they can't always honour the games.
“Khumalo said Phinda Pupa who always stands in for them on the poles did her utmost best to keep goals out.
“She is not a keeper she plays in the midfield so we are in need of a keeper who will only be in the poles.
“We have always been a winning team, so we had to speak to our players and motivate them because we have quality players on our side.”
City will have to do without their key players like Mihlali Maxham who is nursing a knee injury and Aphelele Mpambani who is out on a red card.
Meanwhile, University of Fort Hare coach Lucky Tshivhase reacted to his side’s 9-0 defeat at the hands of Thunderbirds and he admitted the Alice side was facing a tough time as it was battling to keep the same players on the field.
“Things are bad, we have players inside campus (Alice), then we have players in King William’s Town and surrounding areas and in East London.
“This is a very difficult situation for me as coach, because I don’t have players with me to train and prepare for games I only get players when we are playing a game.”
He said the lack of resources was another stumbling block for his team as they had to make adjustments due to their circumstances.
“We need more resources so we can have players during our training session even if it means picking them up from their different areas. The league does not recognise the University’s holiday calendar so we lose players because of holidays. Like last weekend most of them were gone because they were on a break.”
UFH women have two points after having played nine games hence they will want to focus on their striking force so as to improve their end results.
“We are lacking strikers in the team and defence but we can't work on those shortcomings until we have a stable team. Because in the second half the score was 2-0 and we conceded seven more goals after that.”
