Top South African and local marathon star Lusapho April will be taking on the Sole Teaser at this weekend’s Caltex Sole Destroyer race taking place in the city on Sunday morning.
April is the brand ambassador for this weekend’s race and will now be a part of the event for the first time during its 25th edition.
“Oxford Striders have been my club since 2007, so when they asked if I would step in as brand ambassador this year it was an easy decision for me to say yes,” said April.
“I have never done the race before so I am looking forward to being a part of it on Sunday.
“I am getting back into my training now, so I didn’t want to push myself too hard on a difficult course that I don’t know, so I decided that I will do the 9km Sole Teaser.”
April admits that he will one day look to tackle the main 21km run, but is just looking to take it easy and have some fun this weekend and is hoping that supporters will be out in their numbers on the day.
“One day I think I will definitely take on the main run, but on Sunday I just want to have a chilled one and support the runners on the course,” said April.
“Hopefully everyone will come out and support the runners and make it an amazing atmosphere.”
A very exciting race could be on the cards, with a number of impressive local runners taking part, however they will need to have a good game plan when they take on the tricky course.
“From what I have heard about the 21km course it sounds quite challenging, so if you haven’t trained for it you will struggle,” explained April.
“But we have some very good runners in East London and I think that they will do well on Sunday.”
Following the Sole Destroyer, April may take a shot at the Legends 21km run taking place next weekend Sunday.
“I will see how I feel after the race on Sunday and I will then make a call on whether I will do the Legends half next weekend,” said April.
He will then not take part in any more races this year, and will be planning on what to run next year.
His main focus will most likely be on April when the Commonwealth Games, the Hannover Marathon, the Two Oceans and the Boston Marathon all take place and he will need to make a decision on which one of those events he will take part in.
“I have no more big races this year, I still need to get into shape and then I will see what races I will run at the start of next year,” said April.
“This is the first year in a while that I have been able to have a proper break to relax and recover from everything and I am hoping that will help me have a really good year next year.”
Entry for this weekend’s race can still be found at various Caltex Service Stations or downloaded from http://bit.ly/2wxUiyh #CaltexSoleDestroyer.
Registration will take place today and tomorrow from 5pm to 7pm, and on Saturday from 9am to 12pm at the Oxford Striders Clubhouse.
No entries will be accepted on the morning of the race.
