Prizes and awards will be up for grabs at the 2017 Daily Dispatch Fun Run in Mthatha next weekend as more than 1000 runners gear up to take part in the popular event.

Cash prizes will be on offer for the top finishers in both the 10km and 5km distances, with a prize pool of R10000 being made available for the event.

The main prize will be R1000 to the first male and female finisher in the 10km race, with others then dependant on placing and category.

However, some special awards will also be handed out after the event.

“This activity will have three focus areas being, best child runner who will receive the Bathandwa Ndondo Award, OR Tambo award which will be given to the best senior citizen to finish first in the fun run and the Adelaide Tambo award to be given to the best family team,” OR Tambo mayoral spokesman Ayongezwa Lungisa said.

“Added to that are the obvious health benefits as the fundamental idea behind this is to make sport and its activities fashionable to the OR Tambo District residents,” he said.

Schools are also being encouraged to enter and be a part of the run, in memory of OR Tambo, while the school with the most entries will also receive a prize of sporting gear to the tune of R5000.

“In this year of OR Tambo, who was a teacher, we also take this opportunity to invite schools and teachers to participate in family fun run and family walk,” Lungisa said.

“Teachers are encouraged to give an opportunity to pupils to be part of the activities that celebrate the life of a fearless freedom fighter, a selfless leader and a legend, OR Tambo.”

Entry costs for this year’s event is R40 for adults for the 10km and R30 for the 5km, while kids under 16 pay R25 for both distances.

Entry forms can be found at InkSpot in Mthatha and are open until next week Saturday.

Registration will then take place at BT Ngebs City next week Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 6pm.

The fun run takes place on Sunday October 1 with the 5km starting at Walter Sisulu Sports Grounds, and the 10km starting on the R61 between Sasol and Caltex, both at 7am.
