Eastern Cape and Gauteng took control of the South African Special Schools National Cricket Week (LSEN) in East London yesterday, as the only two unbeaten teams in the Platinum (A) division after two days of play.
The Gauteng LSEN team claimed their third win of the competition yesterday afternoon, beating the Western Province LSEN team by six runs in a tight match to add to wins against Gauteng EO yesterday morning and the Boland LSEN team on Monday.
Against WP, Gauteng batted first and scored a solid 125/4 thanks to a superb effort from Ziaan van Aswegen, who cracked the top score of 76 off 61 balls, featuring eight boundaries.
WP fell just short, reaching 119/6 at the end of their 20 overs, with Van Aswegen claiming 2/17 in four overs, backed by JC Grobbelaar with 2/25.
“I am very happy. This is the first time that we have been able to get these three big wins to start the competition,” said Gauteng coach Marinus Lazenby.
Eastern Cape picked up their first official win over the Gauteng Extraordinary (EO) team in yesterday’s second match, winning by 23 runs.
This after EC drew their first game v WP on Monday and then beat an invitational team yesterday morning.
In the match against Gauteng EO, EC scored 120/8 thanks to an unbeaten 39 from Michael Venter and 22 from Donovan Carlson.
They then bowled well to have Gauteng EO all out for 97, with Siphokuhle Mgoqi’s 4/16 the star effort.
In the morning against the Border Invitational team, EC claimed a tight two-wicket win, although the results against the Border side don’t count.
Bowling first, Border managed to score a competitive 117/9 after 20 overs, thanks to a solid contribution from Sibongile Loni (43), while Bezuidenhout was the star with the ball for EC picking up 3/17 in three overs.
EC then had a slow start chasing, however a top unbeaten 40 from 22 balls from Venter led them over the line.
Other results in the Platinum division on the day saw WP beat Boland in the morning, and Boland beat the Border Invitational side in the afternoon.
