Sharks legend Odwa Ndungane will be hanging up his boots at the end of this season after an illustrious career that has spanned over a decade and a half.
Ndungane was born in Mthatha and moved to East London where he went to school at Hudson Park High along with his already retired twin brother Akona.
He began his career at the Border Bulldogs where he made 49 appearances scoring 125 points between 2000 and 2003.
He then moved up to Pretoria for a short stint at the Bulls and then onto the Sharks where he has been ever since.
The Sharks will use this weekend’s Currie Cup match against Western Province as a tribute to Ndungane as thanks for his 12 years of service at the union.
Ndungane has played 135 Super Rugby matches for the team and also clocked up 104 Currie Cup caps so fa. He will be running onto the field with the jersy #Odwa249* to celebrate the number of professional games he has played for the Cell C Sharks over his career.
This number includes the game against the Western Province on Saturday and nine caps for the Cell C Sharks XV.
He also played nine Tests for the Springboks and it is all set to be a fantastic send off for a stalwart of the game.
“Odwa Ndungane epitomises what it means to be a professional rugby player and over the years his dedication‚ loyalty and contribution to the team remained unwavering‚” said Sharks coach Robert du Preez.
“It is fitting that we honour a player that has given so much to the game and those around him with a tribute match.
“We encourage our fans to come on Saturday to celebrate and acknowledge the massive impact he has made during his distinguished career.”
The Sharks, who have already secured top spot on the Currie Cup log will thus be playing to give Ndungane the perfect send off when they take on WP at Growthpoint Kings Park at 3pm on Saturday.
