Full steam ahead as Berlin November steps into starting blocks for off

The biggest horse-racing extravaganza in the Eastern Cape is back on the horizon and just over a month away as the annual Berlin November Traditional Horse-Racing Handicap prepares for another blockbuster display.

It will be the fourth edition of the increasingly popular event and it is set to be bigger than ever, attracting horse-racing enthusiasts, socialites and fashion lovers from every corner of the country. This year the race day theme will be “Casino Royale” which will govern all the fashion, hospitality and décor elements of the big day with local designers racing to bring about the best interpretation of the day’s theme.

With this being the Eastern Cape’s flagship sport and lifestyle event it offers a myriad of scintillating attractions such as traditional horse-racing of different distances and forms, fashion, food, dance festival, music and art.

“As always we have curated an event with a rich tapestry of VIP lounges, contemporary design couture, solid entertainment and gourmet food,” said Berlin November founder Luthando Bara.

“We are offering a best in class experience which is unrivalled in the Eastern Cape and want to invite the private sector to use the facility on the day for their year-end and team building functions.

“The Berlin November is a melting pot of sports, arts, leisure and recreation. It is a strategic meeting point for sports tourism and the creative economy.

“This medley if nurtured in time, will surely deliver on jobs and spur the economy of the province into dizzying heights.”

The main event of the day is always the traditional horse-racing handicap which boasts a whopping total prize pool of R600000 up for grabs across the various races.

This is to ensure that horse breeders, trainers and jockeys benefit directly from the race. This year, the “Winner takes All” prize for both traditional and Thouroughbreds is a head-spinning R200000.

The races on the day will include Umphalo (speed, turf or galloping races), Umhambo (trippling races), and Umkhwelo (endurance races).

A whole host of other events will also be on offer on the day, with something available for everyone.

The second Galaxy Bingo 5km fun run designed for families, colleagues and friends. Will take place, with the fun run kicking off festivities and prizes galore to be won.

Local, national and international artists will also be performing throughout the day on the main stage, keeping the crowd entertained. This includes international acts such as Swaziland-born Sands leading a pack of multiple award-winning musos such as Amanda Black, Sjava, Prince Kaybee, Ladies of Dance Thuli P and Ms Pru, while also featuring in this year’s lineup is the upcoming local group SSPEL from Ndevana which has taken SA by storm.

Hosting the dance floor are television personalities Lusanda Mbane (Scandal), Motsoaledi Setumo (Generations), Thuli Phongolo (Generations) and more.

There will also be an extensive fashion show, craft market and children’s village at the event.

“We are also pleased to announce that the Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board (ECGBB), the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC), Daily Dispatch, Umhlobo Wenene, BCMM and Galaxy Bingo and Grill as the sponsors of the event,” said Bara.

The Berlin November will take centre-stage at the horse-racecourse in Berlin on November 25.
