The Border semi-professional team gets back down to business today when they welcome Western Province to Buffalo Park for their Sunfoil 3-Day Cup match.

It is Border's first home game of the season and they will be fired up to make a statement after a solid start in their opening drawn match against Northerns two weeks ago.

“The guys are looking forward to the game, in terms of our batting we are very confident, the guys came to the party against Northerns and I believe they will do well again,” Border coach Frank Plaatjes said.

“On the bowling front we will be without Fojela for the match. That is a big blow for us as he is our strike bowler, but I feel we have some good players who can step in and we are quietly confident for the game.”

Border have had two weeks to prepare for Western Province and they will have been working hard to fix any flaws that may have crept in in their last fixture.

This will be Western Province’s opener for the season and will be looking to get off to a good start.

“I think we have prepared well; we have focused on all aspects of the game and reinforced what we did well in the first match and worked on the things we didn’t do, so I think the guys are ready,” said Plaatjes.

“But Western Province is a very tough side, it is their first match so they will want to start well and we will have to be ready for that.”

The team will be captained by opening batsman Mkhululi Calana for the first time, with regular captain Gionne Koopman currently playing for the Warriors. Calana firmly established himself at the top of the order last season and he will be looking to thrive in his new position.

“He has a good cricket brain and it is always nice to expose other players to develop leadership positions so I think he will be a good leader,” said Plaatjes. “We also have some senior players in the team such as (Christiaan) Jonker to help guide him, so I am confident he will do well.”

Border will be hoping that having homeground advantage will also boost their chances of a result.

“We have prepared accordingly and know exactly what to expect and are ready for everything,” said Plaatjes.

Following the three-day encounter, Border will take on Western Province in their Provincial one-day cup match and will be looking to make it two wins out of two. “We would love to win this one as well,” said Plaatjes.

“The guys are very determined, we have always been a very good one-day outfit and I think if we can build on last week’s performance it will be great for the team and put us in a good position early in the competition.”

The action gets under way at 10am this morning, with Sunday’s one-day clash kicking off at 10.30am.
