Samuel Julies came off the bench to score the only goal of the match, taking Chippa United to the next round of the Telkom Knockout Cup after they beat Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 at Sisa Dukashe Stadium yesterday.

The first half was filled with much anticipated thrills as both sides tried to assert their dominance.

Sundowns’ Thokozani Sekotlong had a go at Daniel Akpeyi in the first 10 minutes but the experienced goal- keeper maintained his composure to make a save.

Abel Mabaso provided a nice short cross to Paseka Mako, who missed the ball because of pressure from Dennis Onyango.

Khama Billiat and Percy Tau did all they could to reach the Chilli Boys’ turf but Phetso Maphanga and James Okwuosa stood their ground.

Downs received a free kick, which was taken by Tau, but it didn’t produce the desired result as he hit a wall of Chilli Boys players. It was blow-by-blow action as both sides desperately sought to score, while trying to avoid conceding during the first half. Hachi Fares missed a clear shot, the ball going just inches wide of the goal posts.

Akpeyi was working overtime while Onyango marked time as the African champions kept on knocking on the door, but the Chilli Boys took the fight to the visitors. Mako went far into their turf for a one-on-one confrontation with Onyango, but the linesman ruled he was offside.

The absence of Mike Mayambela didn’t make any difference as Mpho Mvelase and Sizwe Mndlindzo kept exerting pressure on the Brazilians. Even though that was the case Tau desperately tried to catch the Chilli Boys off-guard as he tussled with Okwuosa.

The first half ended in a stalemate as both sides failed to get an opening goal, and the second half promised to be a spectacle.

Motjeka Madisha thought he had scored an opening goal for Downs in the first five minutes of the second half, after getting into a one-on-one situation with Akpeyi. Madisha shot straight to the side opposite to where the Chilli Boys keeper went, but the referee ruled it was not a legitimate goal. Themba Zwane missed a golden opportunity to score after he penetrated the home side’s midfield to find himself in the box, but the Chilli Boys defenders were having none of it. Manzini was replaced by Julies, who opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes of the second half. He scored after receiving a beautiful square pass from Mvelase, who received a beautiful through pass from Paseka Mako. The midfielder went past Downs players to score.

Kurt Lentjies and Julies terrorised Bangaly Soumahoro, who was trying his best to help Onyango to execute his duties.

Chippa then made another substitution, replacing Lentjies with central defender Kristopher Bergman to shut the door and defend their lead.

Mako could have got a second goal for the Chilli Boys when Downs defenders locked him down in the box. He tried to fire but the ball was deflected back to Mabaso, who also tried his luck from outside the box.

The African champions felt the wrath of the Chilli Boys as they penetrated Downs’ box.

Leonardo Castro missed a header when he received a corner kick from Billiat, his attempt going to the far right of the goalmouth.

Castro then went into the box with Tau with Maphanga there to secure the Chilli Boys’ turf, but that didn’t deter Tau as he tried to score from outside the box.
