Chippa United coach Teboho Moloi says their 1-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane at the weekend was a hard-fought battle, where his charges had to dig deep to secure a spot in the Telkom Knockout quarterfinals.

Moloi said the Brazilians were a difficult opponent but that they had given them a run for their money.

“It was an attacking game and it could have gone either way, because both teams never sat back as we were attacking each other .

“When I started as you know I was an attacking player so I never wanted to defend, if I could shut the door that’s fine, because going forward we never had any problem.

“And I think in the past when my players went forward – they went in numbers and wouldn’t be aware what’s happening behind them.”

Moloi said they had to work on going forward and the fact that his charges were prepared to dig deeper would make matters manageable.

“They worked very hard for every draw and each and every win they get and for the past five games I know I have been called ‘Mr Draws’. But it was more important that they understand they have a point on hand and not to give it away by fighting for the two that they don’t have.

“Last week was a matter of revising how secure those points were if you are a goal up. “You look at Arrows, we went one goal up and then we dropped our guard and then Arrows came back and they nearly took our point away, but luckily enough we still managed to work it out.

“We are not yet a done product we are still at work and we still need to work even harder. They call it transition but I call it reverse from defence to attack.”

Moloi said being drawn with Kaizer Chiefs in the tournament’s quarterfinal was a challenge they had to overcome. “As you know I come from the rivals so it’s going to be very difficult, so we need to fight and play so we can show that this was a no a fluke.

“Coming to the league games we just hope Zuke and Katlego will be fine so we can send out a strong team. Playing away if it's a smash-and-grab let it be, but at home it has to be the slaughter house,” the coach said.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ coach, Pitso Mosimane calmly admitted the defeat which saw him losing three matches in a row showed a need to go back to the drawing board.

“We did what we had to do, we pushed the home team in one half and we also tried to penetrate and we couldn’t the way we wanted to and to be honest, we didn’t have that many clear chances and we were caught off guard. Hopefully we will recover soon because the best teams in the world go through the same slump we’re going through.”

The mentor of the current African champions said he had apologised to former Kaizer Chiefs attacking midfielder George Lebese for taking him off early in the game. He said they had to find a goal, hence he pulled back midfielders to add strikers.

“It does look nice because he came and he went off in a short period of time, and I told him he you have to understand why I’m doing this.”
