Old Boys Tennis Club ruled supreme at the GrowthPoint Properties TopGuns regional club championships as they claimed the title and R10000 grand prize money after a weekend of scintillating tennis at Selborne Park.
In a tight final Old Boys narrowly defeated Beacon Bay, with the round having to be decided in the mixed doubles encounter.
It started with the Beacon Bay women drawing first blood when Lizelle Botha and Cherrie Biggs beat Karlien Kriel and Jenny Milner 4-1,
4-2.
Old Boys then bounced back as the teenage pairing of Ryan Little and Samuel Townes beat Bernard de Boer and Ryan Armstrong 4-2, 5-3 to level things up. It was then left to the mix doubles to decide who the winners would be and in the end Ryan Little and Jenny Milne teamed up to beat Bernard de Boer and Lizelle Botha 5-4 (tie-breaker); 4-2 to claim the championship.
This means that Old Boys will now have the honour of representing Buffalo City at the national championships to be held in February next year.
In all six clubs competed in the Buffalo City champs with Old Boys and Beacon Bay joined by Destiny A and B and OR Tambo A and B.
“All the clubs performed well and ultimately a winner had to be decided upon,” said Tennis Eastern Cape president Neil Naidoo.
“Destiny A ended third and gave a good account of themselves against both Beacon Bay and Old Boys, all their matches against these clubs were very close.”
Fourth place in the tournament then went to Destiny B, while OR Tambo A finished fifth and their B team sixth.
“Despite the late start the day was a resounding success and all tennis players and the crowd was full of praise for both TSA and GrowthPoint Properties for its commitment to developing club tennis,” said Naidoo.
“Spectators were saying that it has been a long time since they have been exposed to such a high level of tennis and excitement and despite finishing about 10pm most spectators stayed to the end.
“Of the six participating clubs four were predominantly black clubs and this is an indication that we are developing and promoting tennis within our black communities in the Eastern Cape.”
At the same time as the Buffalo City tournament the Nelson Mandela Metro version of the champs was also being battled out in Port Elizabeth.
Eight clubs participated and the finals that saw Cradock Tennis Club from Cradock emerge victorious.
They defeated Wembley Tennis Club from the Nelson Mandela Metro in the final, comfortably winning the men’s and women’s doubles meaning the mixed doubles did not need to be played.
In the men’s doubles Ricky and Robbie de Klerk beat Helgaard Zietsman and Edmund Drake 4-0, 4-1 whilst the Cradock women’s combination of Nandi Norval and Liezl Rautenbach beat Di Gascoyne and Janine Zietsman 5-3. 5-3.
