Up-and-coming cricket talent will be on show when Border host neighbours Eastern Province in their Sunfoil 3-Day Cup and CSA One-Day Provincial Challenge matches at Buffalo Park this week.
With a number of players from both teams unavailable due to Warriors Ram Slam T20 commitments, two exciting and youthful sides have been named to take on each other.
Border have named an extended 16-man squad for the two games, with the majority of the team 25 years old and younger.
“We have made a big squad as we have a number of players who are carrying niggles and still have to pass fitness tests, so we will evaluate them tomorrow (today) and take it from there,” said Border coach Frank Plaatjes.
“When it comes to selection it is a very good headache to have when you have a solid squad of youngsters fighting for places, and the ones who get to play will be looking to take their chances.”
However, Border has welcomed a couple of senior players in Phaphama Fojela and Somila Seyibokwe back into the side after they missed the last match against Western Province, while Aya Gqamane was also made available after initially being on Warriors duty.
“We will have Aya available, which is great. He played extremely well in our last three-day game against Western Province and led the line superbly, and we will be looking to him to impress again,” said Plaatjes.
“I am very happy to have Fojela and Somila back. Fojela brings so much experience and skill to our bowling attack, and Somila is an integral part of our batting order, so they will play an important part in this week’s matches.”
The EP team also has a youthful look about it, with a number of youngsters in line to make their mark.
“This is an opportunity for some of the young guys to see if they can step up. Obviously we are missing one or two guys like David White, who is still injured, and Kelly Smuts and Solo Nqweni, who have gone up to the Warriors, so it will be an opportunity for some of the guys to stake a claim,” said EP coach Piet Botha.
The three-day match gets under way tomorrow morning at 10am and should be concluded by Saturday afternoon, while the one-day encounter will kick-off at 9.30am on Sunday morning.
