East London-born junior karting star Kwanda Mokoena continued his fantastic rise in the karting world when he took the South African Mini Rok karting champion honours for 2017.

The 13-year-old Mokoena, who attends Rivonia Primary in Johannesburg, powered his way to a dominant SA Mini Rok title to end off his primary class karting career in style.

He will be making the big step-up to full-time high school class karting next year and will be taking plenty of momentum into the new season with him, after he also qualified for the season-ending Rok Cup Finals which took place in Italy, where he gained valuable experience.

“As I bid farewell to an illustrious time in my Mini Kart career, I feel humbled and honoured to have been part of such a competitive class and to race against some of the best drivers in the country,” said Mokoena.

“It was no easy feat, but I grew in this class and I ended the year knowing that it took hard work, blood, sweat and tears to make it to the Rok Cup International Finals in Italy and beating over 160 of the world’s best drivers to the final, where I finished 28th in the World.

“I am super-proud of my achievements and I would like to thank God, my family Team Squadra Corse my right-hand man Thabs and all those who contributed to help me make my dreams come true of finally becoming a South African Mini Rok National Champion.

“Also a big thank you to all my fellow competitors, you were all fantastic to race against and I wish you all the best as I move up next year.”

Mokoena has been in brilliant form over the last few years and proved that when he became the youngest driver to win a junior level karting championship anywhere in the world at just 12 years of age last year, when he triumphed in the Junior Rok 125cc.

He also finished double runner-up in the 2016 South African Mini Rok and Maxterino champs and in 2015 claimed the Northern Regions Mini Rok 60cc and Maxterino 60cc titles.

He continued with that awesome form this season and will now hope he makes a big splash at the next level next year.

Mokoena will also be back in the place of his birth soon as he will be heading down to Cove Rock for the December holidays where he spends time with his family and grandparents.

When chatting to the Dispatch last year Mokoena admitted that he loves coming to East London, especially because it’s his home town and always close to his heart.
