National cricket week action officially kicks off today as the U15 week gets under way in Bloemfontein to start a hectic two-week period of age group cricket to finish off 2017.
Some thrilling action is on the cards and the Border team will be aiming to impress and try to make the final game.
A strong side has been selected for the week and the team will be led by Selborne College’s Adam du Plessis.
Four players each are in the team from Selborne and Hudson Park, while two come from Queen’s College and one each from Stirling High, Tapa High and Ndzululwazi High.
“As with all of our teams the selectors have picked the best players in the region, so it is a great team heading to the U15 week,” said Border Amateur cricket manager Deon Muller.
“It is now up to the players to go out there and perform to the best of their ability and do Border proud.”
The team will face a tough test in Bloemfontein, with some hot and humid conditions expected which they will need to overcome.
“The conditions in Bloemfontein are very hot, there will be some days when the temperature is 30ºC plus and that is always tough to adapt to,” explained Muller.
“Most of the wickets on that side are batting friendly, so we could be in for some big scores and the bowlers will have to work extra hard to get results.
“But it will be a great opportunity for the players to play quality cricket in great facilities.”
The Border team enjoyed a good buildup to the week, with some competitive warmup games and they will be looking to take some positive momentum into the week’s action.
“Our expectations for the team are high, and the players are taking some good form into the tournament,” said Muller.
“The players know that you can only get out what you put in and they will be motivated to go out there and perform.”
The team is being coached by Border physio Shannon Musto who is getting into the coaching side of things and he will be eager for his young charges to do well.
Musto will be supported by Terry Nqolo from Dale College as his assistant coach, while Selborne’s Warwick Scholl will be the team manager.
“Provincial age group cricket is always a great opportunity for our young up-and-coming coaches to impress and they will want to bring the best out of their players,” admitted Muller.
