It's crunchtime for Mthatha Bucks as they prepare to face National First Division log leaders Highlands Park at the Mthatha Stadium this afternoon.
Bucks were reeling as they were coming off a string of losses, but assistant coach Sibusiso Mapompo was adamant their preparations for this tough encounter were on par and they would bounce back during this game.
“So far so good, no complaints. As you know we are coming out of a loss and the past weekends have not been productive, but it’s been a good week for the team.”
Mapompo commended his young guns who came out blazing during the game against Mbombela United at Kanyamazane Stadium in Mpumalanga, where they were beaten 2-1 over the weekend.
“We’ve been trying to motivate them, the new guys that were drafted into the team last week. Those young boys played well and we had to remind them they did do well – even though we didn’t get the desired result.
“But the team performance was on point, Lucky Mathosi scored, Terrence Mashego, and the goalkeeper Andile Mbanjwa and then a few including our centre-back Steve Anoma.
“We told them not to lose hope and now it’s about how we are going to bounce back.”
Mapompo said they would take each game at a time. After today’s encounter they’re scheduled to travel to Vosloorus Stadium to face the ambitious Jomo Cosmos, who are second on the log, while they were at 12th position.
“If we get a win against Cosmos, at least we’ll be running away from the teams that are at the bottom. Even if we don’t reach the top teams. Because where we are now we’ll be fighting relegation and we don’t want that for the team. We want to be at the top half.
“It’s not a good feeling to appear in the bottom eight, so we’re fighting to get back to the top half of the log, and it starts tomorrow.”
The Bucks mentor said the most important agenda now at Bucks was to fight for their supporters after their losses, including the 4-1 defeat by Ubuntu FC, who are log bottom dwellers, but managed to steal their first win this season against Bucks.
“The last time we played home we gave them a shocking performance, so we need to win their trust back. I know they want a win but when we lose we need to lose with dignity.
“Not like the way we did against Ubuntu because that was a painful loss, but I can promise them that they will see a fighting Bucks that they know on that field.
“The boys are looking good and feeling motivated, but people will see that during the game.”
