William Mugeyi proved to have the Midas touch as the new coach of FC Buffalo when he inspired his team to break their losing streak in the ABC Motsepe League this past weekend.
Buffalo claimed a hard-fought 2-1 away win against competitive Highbury at the NMU Stadium in Port Elizabeth.
The East London-based outfit had a rough start to the season, losing six games and drawing three, and with the weekend win are now sitting on six points at the bottom of the third-tier league log.
Buffalo assistant coach Malusi Mxoli said they were fortunate to have Mugeyi take over the reins.
“For us to have a bad start such as this one was starting to stress us, because this club has a history in this league.
“This did not sit well with us as the technical team and management as a whole, but thankfully we roped in coach Mugeyi, who has since added some weight and experience.
“We started with a draw last week against Spears, and this weekend we went to PE and we were able to achieve what we’ve always wanted this season.”
Mxoli said winning for the first time after the poor start to the season gave the team a good feeling, and victories in places such as PE, where the match officiating might not be on point, were special.
“In most sporting codes referees like to have an impact on how the game ends, but it’s a good feeling that we were able to go to PE and steal a win.”
Mxoli said working with Mugeyi, who is a former PSL player, was a dream come true because of the tons of experience he had.
“We grew up watching him playing top-flight football, and so far during the short time we’ve had him I’ve learnt a lot from him.
“I believe the worst is over now and going forward we will be able to achieve what we aim for with the help of the coach. Yes, we might have tough times ahead but the corner that was giving problems – we’ve finally taken the bend.”
Mxoli said it was tough to beat Highbury as they had a solid defence mechanism, but it was a blessing in disguise that the Buffalo players were hungry for the three points they earned.
“We attacked through the first half but nothing came of it; those guys really defended well and we had to contain them in order for them not to get the ball.
“Mzwandile Lefiya finished a great ball from Tinashe Moyo to put us in the lead.”
Buffalo committed a foul inside the box and the match official awarded a penalty, which Highbury converted.
“Deep into injury time I was delighted when we got a free-kick and Teboho Kukana made us proud when he scored the second goal for us.”
