Mthatha Bucks may be coming out of a painful loss over the weekend but Sibusiso Mapompo has maintained Amathol’mnyama will rise again during their Nedbank Cup qualification match against Uthongathi at the Mthatha Stadium this afternoon.
Amathol’mnyama were served humbled pie by National First Division log-leaders, Highlands Park, when the Johannesburg-outfit beat Bucks 3-1 during a league encounter at the Mthatha Stadium this past weekend.
Bucks, who officially announced new coach Duncan Lechesa on Monday, will now aim to build up momentum for their next match this coming weekend as they’re scheduled to travel to Vosloorus Stadium to lock horns with Jomo Cosmos on Sunday.
During the encounter against Lions of the North, Amathol’mnyama's influential players suffered minor injuries including their goalscorer Lucky Mathosi and skipper Thabiso Mokoena.
“We’re all clear now with injuries and our preparations went well even though we had those injury scares that we had to look at.
“But we checked if they could make into the game and we are satisfied,” said Mapompo.
“The new coach is still trying to instil his way of playing and the boys have been trying hard to follow his instructions.
“But it’s still too soon to see what the coach is trying to do with the team – because we’ve only had him for about two days with him.
“We just hoping we’ll get the desired results tomorrow and the nice thing is that when there’s a new sheriff in town everyone gives 100%.
“You can see the players are pumped, they want to impress him, and you can see that coach Lechesa knows what he’s doing, he knows what he wants and what he’s talking about and it’s just a matter of time we get the desired results.”
Following Bucks’ poor performance in the league that has their fans displeased, Mapompo expressed his gratitude to the fans who stuck with the team through their trying times.
“Things will improve from now on because they have been crying ‘where is the head coach’ you know.
“And now that we have the right man for the job, the belief of winning will continue to grow, even though we as caretaker coaches we were doing everything in our power to help the team do well.
“Even as a player you need to have a coach to believe that you are going in the right direction, but we appreciate how our fans have stuck with us even though some of them have been throwing foreign object into the grounds .”
Mapompo continued: “You could see the passion and fire in their eyes and this was the same situation with the players during the game against Highlands Park they gave their best and I’m proud of them.
“Everyone who is involved with the team must not stop believing in us, because we will move on from this position to a much better place.”
Bucks must deliver the goods now.
