It was a disappointing conclusion to the CSA U17 Momentum Cricket Week for Border as their final 50 over match against South Western District (SWD) at Alfred Schoeman Ground in Buffalo Park was washed out yesterday.
Before rain stopped play, Border elected to bowl first after winning the toss.
However, they could only play six overs in which fast bowler Anda Sonwabile Duda claimed two SWD scalps with 20 on the board.
That, unfortunately proved to be the only action the onlookers around the park would get to see on the day. Border coach Shannon Musto admitted his disappointment at the situation as they wanted to rectify the mistakes made in their loss to the Free State on Saturday.
“Looking at the way we played yesterday , the skills are there, I think it was more the approach today. Yesterday we were going through the motions, but today we came out with fresh energies, realising that we trying to leave a legacy here” he said.
On Friday, the Border side finished their day with an impressive 18-run victory over Mpumalanga before losing to Free State on Saturday.
Musto pinpoints the differences between the two results.
“I think it was evident in terms of our attitude. I think we took the game for granted once we posted a big score – 210 runs was always going to be defendable. We dropped a few vital catches,” said Musto.
Being the home team, Border were always going to be closely watched, the pressure aspect being something Musto admits was spoken about.
“We have played good cricket in patches. We have good players but we really struggled with our consistency.”
Musto said he was happy with the amount of hard work and the character his players displayed. He identified star all-rounder Nonelela Yikha, 16, who took six wickets against Western Province as one player who stands a big chance of making the South Africa U17 team.
