It was double delight for the Border U19 cricket team as they claimed two wins in their T20 matches against North West and Namibia on day three of the 2017 Coca-Cola Khaya Majola week at St David’s Marist in Johannesburg yesterday.
Jason Raubenheimer put in a barnstorming man-of-the-match performance in the morning match against North West to give Border their first win of the week, and performed with the ball against Namibia to enjoy a really good day.
Against North West, Raubenheimer hit an unbeaten 75 opening the batting, before claiming an amazing 5/17 off four overs with the ball, as Border cruised to a 57-run win.
“It is definitely my best performance ever at the Coke week, and I am very happy, especially for the team to get that first win,” said Raubenheimer.
He then picked up 3/32 against Namibia, before his only blip of the day saw him slide his foot out of his crease to be stumped for a duck, however it did not matter in the end, as Border eased to a five-wicket win. “It was important to get a win today,” said Raubenheimer.
“It was not a great start for us on the first day, but against Western Province on day two we came out as a better, more positive team and we took that momentum into today's games.”
In the North West match Border won the toss and elected to bat.
Loyiso Mzamo (one), Jason Niemand (11) and Sinethemba Qeshile (one) all fell cheaply as Border slipped to 41/3.
This brought Josneil Long to the crease and, along with Raubenheimer, they took the attack to the North West bowlers, sharing in an unbeaten 106-run partnership to power Border to 147/3.
Raubenheimer ended on 75 off of 62 balls, with five fours and three maximums, while Long managed a run-a-ball 44, including a nice ramp for four and a straight six over the bowler’s head off successive balls towards the end of the innings.
North West then never threatened in the chase with their 26-run opening partnership the best they could muster as they were all out for 91.
Border started with their pace attack, with a Bradley Mauer run out and a wicket each to Sebastian Denison-Brown and Siphenathi Ngqadu reducing North West to 38/3.
The spin duo of Raubenheimer and Luke Dallas then took centre-stage, bowling eight overs straight between them and Dallas claiming 1/19 to back up Raubenheimer well, before Mauer picked up a wicket to end the match.
In the second game, Namibia batted first and got off to a good start thanks to a 42-run second wicket partnership between Lohandre Louwrens (29) and Shaun Fouche (17). However from 51/1 they then lost their next nine wickets for 49 runs as Siphamndla Krweqe starred picking up 4/17, while Dallas, 2/11, and Mauer, 1/15, were the other wicket-takers along with Raubenheimer.
Border captain Qeshile also took a blinding catch on the boundary, parrying the ball in the air as it looked like he was heading over the rope, before spinning around, catching the ball one-handed and falling alongside the rope.
Border’s chase got off to a rocky start as Raubenheimer, Siyamthanda Zini (two) and Niemand (two) fell early with Border 28/3, before 24 runs off the bat of Matt Dewar and then a 41-run stand between Qeshile (35no) and Long (14) took Border within sight of the win. Dallas (10no) then accompanied his captain over the line in the last over for a good win.
Border now head into 50-over cricket today, with them taking on KwaZulu-Natal at the University of Witwatersrand.
