Captain Sinethemba Qeshile became the second Border player in three days to be crowned the Coca-Cola Hero of the Day at the 2017 Khaya Majola week in Johannesburg on Wednesday afternoon.
Following on from Jason Niemand picking up the award on day two, Qeshile was then the stand out performer on day four, with a fantastic all-round performance seeing him named by the panel.
He hit a magnificent unbeaten 103 with the bat, to lead Border to a huge total of 287/4 against Kwa Zulu-Natal, before taking up the gloves behind the stumps and taking five catches as KZN were bowled out for 153, giving Border a massive 134-run win.
“The team supported me throughout my innings and they were really excited for me when I got my hundred. I am just happy that I managed to score runs for the team,” exclaimed Qeshile on receiving the award.
A coach from a prominent Johannesburg school who was at the game said that it was one of the best centuries he had ever seen hit by a school boy.
Proteas legend and Coca-Cola Hero of the Day panel lead Victor Mpitsang also congratulated Qeshile on his impressive exploits.
“Congratulations to Sinethemba Qeshile for scoring a dominant hundred followed up by taking five catches as a wicketkeeper, he had a strong performance today and as a captain led from the front with a powerful captain’s innings,” said Mpitsang.
Eastern Province bowler Campbell de Wet was very unlucky to miss out on the hero award on the day after he claimed a hattrick and brilliant figures of 5/10 in six overs to help his side claim a thumping nine wicket win over Free State.
On any other day De Wet would have picked up the award, and he was in the running, but in the end it was Qeshile who got the nod from the panel after a tight vote.
Today is now the final day of the week and will see Border in action in the main game against unbeaten hosts Gauteng, while EP take on Boland in a clash between two inform sides that have only lost once over the week so far.
