Anaso in the zone ahead of 2018

South African sprinter Anaso Jobodwana will have little or no rest this holiday as he prepares for next year’s Commonwealth Games which will be held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia from April 4 - 15.

Jobodwana, who hails from Phakamisa in King William’s Town, was at the Jan Smuts Stadium where he had a light training session by himself.

A few soccer players watched as he paced up and down the track while listening to his music. He looked at ease when Dispatch reporters approached him. “I am here to train and you guys want to have an interview with me,” he joked.

Aged 25, Jobodwana has earned a reputation as one of the country’s major talents and said the festive season was a time for him to prepare mentally and physically for next year.

“It’s a big part of dedication to focus on what you're doing when everyone is having all the fun,’’ he said.

“There is always someone working and always someone prepared to go to the track and me training and putting in the work gives me the confidence to go on the track and know that I have done everything that I can to do well.”

He is one of the 23 athletes who have met the qualifying criteria set by Athletics SA (ASA) for the Commonwealth Games.

“The greatest thing is qualifying for the Commonwealth Games. The period for qualifying was between October to December. Luckily I qualified for the 100 metres and that was good enough for me to have my confidence intact for 2018, and also build a foundation for 200 metres which is my main race.”

Jobodwana, who recently got married to his American wife Tylor Evans, shared news on becoming a dad soon. However, he would not go into detail about his personal life.

“I am here to visit family and my main purpose was to do a training clinic but it could not happen so I will just do my training and go back. 2017 has been alright. It has not been great but in terms of learning it has been a great learning season. Besides that I have a baby coming.”

Jobodwana is currently based in Durban and he said he misses Eastern Cape food the most when he is away. “Man, there are so many things I miss about home when I am far. One of them definitely has to be my mother’s dumplings and her fresh homemade bread which she makes whenever I’m back.”
