Exciting powerboating action is on the cards this weekend as the East London National inflatable powerboat championships takes place in East London tomorrow and Sunday.
About 100 athletes from all over South Africa will be taking part in this weekend’s event, as well as past and present world champions.
This will be the first National Powerboat Racing event to be held in East London since 2012.
“We encourage the East London public to come and enjoy a festive and fun beach day, filled with exciting and exhilarating racing from South Africa’s top Powerboating pilots,” said East London's top powerboater and former world champ Chad Romans.
“This National forms one of four Nationals taking place through the year and all over SA.
“From these four Nationals, the overall top three boats will be selected to go and compete at the World Championships taking place in France at the end of September.”
This makes the stakes for each National extremely high and some thrilling racing should be on the cards as competitors go all out for the win. Inflatable Powerboater participants will arrive in East London this afternoon where they will meet at the East London Yacht Club for scrutineering (technical check of engines, boats and safety equipment), as well as an opening function at the Yacht Club.
“This would be a great opportunity for any person interested in starting this sport to come interacted with the experienced athletes,” said Romans. Racing will then get under way tomorrow morning at Gonubie main beach from 9am where there will be racing until around 3pm. This will consist of three heats of six laps and a final of nine laps in the three current classes, which are stock, pro-stock and modified.
On Sunday the moves over to the Orient Beach, starting from 9am where it will be the long haul discipline which comprises of an endurance of about 120km non-stop racing.
