Union and Bhisho locked in talks over planned Sopa disruption

Nehawu leaders at the Bhisho legislature branch are currently locked in an urgent meeting with ANC chief whip over the union's threat to disrupt the State of the Province Address (Sopa) tomorrow.

The meeting was confirmed by Nehawu chair in Bhisho legislature Madoda Nkwali this morning saying they would decide about the way forward after the impromptu meeting.

The union's strike action calling for an end to irregularities at supply chain in Bhisho and nepotism started on Wednesday and the union had threatened to up the ante tomorrow should they not get asnwers to their demand by today.

More than 240 workers in the legislature are affiliated to Nehawu.

Nkwali said this morning: "Our strike action is still on but we are on pause because we have been called into a meeting with the ANC chief whip," said Nkwali.

"But by 12 noon today the meeting will be over and we will decide on whether to halt the strike or carry on as we have been doing until our demand are met."

The Sopa is expected to start at 11am tomorrow at the Bhisho legislature.
