EC Bees goalkeeper Camagu Kanana says even though they have a mammoth task ahead as they prepare to take on Mamelodi Sundowns tomorrow they are not fazed at all.
Bees take on Masandawana at Loftus Versfeld Stadium for a spot in the last eight teams of the lucrative Nedbank Cup, worth R7 million.
Kanana, from Dimbaza, said he would use his experience from Bidvest Wits, who he joined at the age of 17.
He then got promoted to the Wits reserve side, where he played for half of the season.
Kanana then moved to FC Palmeros in North West – a club owned by former Mthatha Bucks coach Ian Palmer, who’s now at National First Division side, Super Eagles.
The 22-year-old player had to return home because of personal matters, but he said he’d found a new home at Bees, where he was still finding his feet on the pitch.
“Everything is looking to be going the right direction, and I’m excited because I have played five games for Bees,” said Kanana.
“And I’m also grateful for the support I get from my teammates and coaching management – I’m very confident going into this game against Sundowns, but even though I know it’s not going to be easy because we playing a big team.”
Although a bit anxious at the prospect of facing the former African champions, Kanana was confident of rising to the occasion.
“As the game gets closer I’m not that scared anymore, and with the way things are in the team, we forget that we playing Sundowns and we relax.
“We’ll give them the respect they deserve but knowing very well that this is an opportunity for us as well to make something for ourselves and the team.”
He said growing up in a township that lacked opportunities for the youth would push him to give 100% on the pitch.
“I don’t see another opportunity as big as this one for me, so if I don’t grab it with both hands to showcase my talents I won’t get another one.”
This will be first time Bees compete in the last 16 teams, after going down 3-1 to Orlando Pirates at Sisa Dukushe Stadium last season.
