Blues sneak a vital win over CPUT after confusing end

Confusion reigned during last night’s Varsity Shield match between the University of Fort Hare Blues and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) at the Davidson Stadium in Alice as the hosts were awarded an 18-17 win after the game had ended.

The match looked to have ended 17-all after the Blues scored two unconverted tries and were awarded a penalty try, while CPUT scored one converted try, one unconverted try and kicked a penalty.

However, after the match Blues coach Lumumba Currie confirmed to the Daily Dispatch that the penalty try, which was originally marked down as a seven pointer as it was the week before during the Blues v Walter Sisulu University All Blacks game, was revealed in fact as an eight pointer, which gave the Blues a win.

Right wing Pickard Mure opened the scoring for the visitors when he caught the Blues’ defensive line off-guard, taking off from the 22-metre-line and speeding off for a superb try, with flyhalf Andre Swanepoel converting for an 8-0 lead.

However, just two minutes later the Blues’ Sokhana Mpemba snuck in a try. Flyhalf Kenan Richard missed the conversion, leaving the score 8-5.

In the 34th minute Mure was sent off for a 10 minute break after he got yellow carded for a dangerous tackle on Blues scrumhalf Lindokuhle Kenene.

The visitors surprised the capacity crowd as they held their defence. Swanepoel scored a penalty from the 22-metre-line to take a 10-5 lead into the interval.

In the second half CPUT’s scrumhalf Jaiden Baron managed to swing past what seemed like a solid Blues defensive line for an unconverted try, moving them 10 points ahead.

The hosts made a breakthrough in the 52nd minute when they got a penalty try to put them just two points behind at 15-13.

The visitors were rewarded with a penalty in the 66th minute, which Swanepoel slotted to put them 17-13 up.

In the 72nd minute Lazola Hlela dotted down for the winning try for the hosts with an unconverted score as they snuck a tight one point win.
