The local cricket season is set to come to a fitting conclusion tonight with the Border cricket awards looking to bring the curtain down on the 2017-18 campaign.

Border officially rounded off their season this past weekend on a positive note when they drew and then beat KwaZulu-Natal in their Sunfoil 3-Day Cup and Provincial One-Day Challenge matches respectively.

They struggled a bit in the three-day match but followed that up with a dominant one-day performance to end on a high.

“The boys were once again resilient in the three-day to save that match after a poor first innings performance with the bat and I think we then took that momentum into the one-day game as well,” admitted Border coach Frank Plaatjes.

“So that was a positive for me ending the season with a win.”

The team finished third on the pool A log in both the three- and one-day competitions.

On the three-day side Border finished behind KwaZulu-Natal and Western Province in first and second above them, having won three matches, lost two and drawn five over the season.

On the one-day front Border were edged into third by KwaZulu-Natal, while North West finished top of the log.

“The season was satisfactory for me,” said Plaatjes.

“The expectations were a bit higher because at the halfway mark we felt we could qualify for one of the finals, we have then let ourselves down a bit in the second half of the season, but overall I still feel we did well.”

The players will now look forward to ending the season with a flourish at tonight’s awards, where they will be recognised for their positive contributions over the season.

Batsman Marco Marais, all-rounder and captain Gionne Koopman and bowler Phaphama Fojela are each up for two awards, while Clayton Bosch, Sithembele Langa and Kabelo Sekhukhune round out the nominees in the three main categories of batsmen, bowler and player of the season.

“I think all the nominees fully deserve to be up there, you can look at their stats and see what wonderful form they have been over the season,” explained Plaatjes.

“It is always a glamorous occasion when it comes to the Border awards and I am looking forward to it.”
