The Buffalo River will be a hive of activity today as school teams and rowing clubs hit the water for a few vital practice sessions ahead of the 128th annual Buffalo Regatta which gets under way tomorrow.

A few school sides had already arrived yesterday and begun setting up, but the bulk is set to pour in today, with boats set to be all over the river.

Tomorrow and Saturday are both Buffalo Regatta days, while Friday will see just the school teams flying down the river for the 56th annual Selborne sprints regatta.

On the junior side local school teams Selborne College and Clarendon High School will be gearing up for the next three days of action on their home river and will hope their intimate knowledge of the river and the various possible conditions will give them a leg up on the competition.

St Andrews College, Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) and Grey High School will be the other Eastern Cape teams looking to do well.

For Clarendon they will be looking to repeat their solid performance of last year.

“We have a good team this year, so far this season we haven’t had any local competition so it is hard to judge,” said Clarendon rowing coach Bill Godfrey.

“We will try and replicate and improve on last year’s results, the girls have been training really hard and it’s all going to come down to what happens on the day and who is best prepared.”

Selborne also enjoyed a good regatta last year and they will want to show their face once again, especially in their own sprints regatta on Friday.

In all 20 school teams will be down and the action should be fierce.

On the senior side local rowing club Leander will be waving the East London flag high when they keep a long tradition going at the regatta. Leander has had a team in every single Buffalo Regatta since its inception and the club will duly make its 128th appearance in Saturday’s finals.

They stand as the only senior rowing club in the country to have competed at every single Buffalo Regatta.

“We want to continue with that tradition,” said Leander Rowing captain Kurt van Aardt.

“We have a good team this year and we are going to be going for the win.”

Leander will be competing along with 15 other senior teams, which includes eight university teams and seven other rowing club sides.

Rhodes University, Nelson Mandela Bay University and Port Elizabeth Rowing Club are the other local Eastern Cape teams involved in the senior division.
