The school rugby season kicks off with some top-class action as the Border Schools Rugby Day gets under way at Selborne College tomorrow.

High schools from across the Border region will be out in full force at Selborne, while the primary schools rugby day will be competed at the Border Rugby Stadium, with both days kicking off att 9am.

The day’s main game will see Selborne College take on Hudson Park High in what should be a blockbuster clash between the two old rivals. Last year Selborne thumped Stirling in the main game, while Hudson narrowly lost to Dale in their match at the Border Schools day.

Clashes between the two sides are often close and after drawing 13-all at Selborne in 2013, Selborne managed an 18-10 win at Hudson last year.

Tomorrow’s match should give an interesting indication of the strength of the two sides and will set up a mouthwatering second clash when they face-off again later in the season.

Some other top games on show will see Dale College take on Port Rex Technical High, Stirling High up against Maclear High, Cambridge versus Zweliyandila High and Queen’s College play Grens High.

The Queen’s versus Grens match is set to be especially interesting after Grens beat Queen’s at last year’s Border Schools day in an exciting match 22-17.

Grens had a very good season last year and it all started with that impressive first win over Queen’s.

The day is also used as the first round of trials in the region for the various provincial school week festivals.

“The Border Schools rugby day serves as a first round of trials in the whole region where talent is showcased and identified by selectors and coaches, highlights which schools are well-prepared and are likely to be rated top in the region and enables schools to have a know-how of what is happening to other schools in the province in terms of developing and growing the game,” said Border Schools president Katiso Mosioua.
