Two Border anglers will be looking forward to some international fishing action for the Proteas Women's team at the World Games in Portugal later this year.

The South African team will also come up against Namibia in an international.

Border anglers Anet Rheeder and Denise Hewitt were selected to represent the Protea Shore Angling team in Portugal in November, while Rheeder was also selected to the Protea team to take on Namibia in Jeffrey's Bay at a date still to be decided.

The selections were made after the recent Ladies Shore Angling National tournament in Jeffery’s Bay which Border won for the first time.

The 10th edition of the tournament, held by the South African Shore Angling Association, was fished over three days in fair weather conditions with 10 provincial teams competing for glory.

The Border Rock and Surf women’s team that travelled to the event comprised anglers Hewitt, Carol Kurz, Rheeder, Elizabeth Morris, Sue Botha and Mishan Sumption, along with manager Johann Rheeder, coach Darian Keeton and guide Alan Prinsloo.

The Border women were in top form to fight back superbly after a difficult first day to haul themselves back up the points ladder and eventually claim first place and the gold medal after picking up 191.68 points, beating challengers from Southern Cape who finished second on 176.66 points and Boland rounding out the podium places in third on 167.89 points.

On day one Border endured a tough day with pickings slim as they ended the day in fifth position, 33.6 points behind the leading province.

Day two saw a marked improvement with some top angling from the women as they forced their way back in to contention finishing the day in second position, trailing leaders Southern Cape by 21.84 points.

Day three was then an all-Border affair as the women put in a dominant performance to score 92.58 points to overhaul Southern Cape and then put daylight between them with a 37-point swing that saw them claim the trophy for the first time.

Border's previous best effort was a bronze medal they picked up in the 2013 event in Struisbaai.

On top of the team achievement the women picked up some individual awards at the tournament.

Sumption ended the event as the top woman angler, accumulating 88.71 points over the three days, while Botha won the trophy and medal for the biggest non-edible catch, a Duckbill Ray of 46.39kg which also won her the Most Outstanding trophy and medal as well.

A personal milestone for two of the anglers was Morris and Hewitt, having represented Border in all the 10 Women’s National Angling Tournaments which began in 2006, finally getting their first gold medal.

In all 17.5kg of edible fish and 1133kg of non-edible catches were made by the anglers and all fish caught were measured and released back to the sea unharmed, following the Catch and Release principle.
