Border to celebrate its stars after frustrating season draws to a close

A long and difficult season for the Border semi-professional cricket team comes to its end tomorrow night at the annual Border Cricket Awards dinner held at Buffalo Park.

For Border’s main team it was not the best of seasons as they struggled in the three-day and one-day formats, while finishing in mid-table on the T20 log.

In the end it was a rebuilding season for the team after they lost a few senior players at the end of last season and introduced a few new faces during the current campaign.

“We had a poor season in the end,” said Border Cricket coach Frank Plaatjes.

“We played really well at stages, but were unfortunately not consistent enough.

“We battled in the longer formats, but I felt we had a good T20 campaign, which was promising.”

Border finished bottom of pool A on the three-day log and second from bottom of pool A on the one-day log, which meant they ended the season without a trophy and after they claimed the one-day trophy for the second time in the 2014/2015 season, they will be disappointed with how they fared this time around.

“We did not expect to finish bottom of the three-day log and second bottom of the one-day, but it was expected that this season was going to be a rebuilding one after we lost a number of senior players and with us having to give opportunities to the younger players over the season,” said Plaatjes.

“It takes a while for new players to get used to the system and with us having a number of close losses over the season the loss of senior players clearly showed in those results.”

Despite the rocky season, Border had a decent end to their campaign and were competitive in the final few games.

“If you look how we played towards the end of the season it was very encouraging and the guys were playing some good cricket,” said Plaatjes.

“I feel that we have learnt a lot over the season and we will be aiming for a much better showing next season.”

Although the team did not do well there were some impressive performances from some of the players and Border cricket will now look to recognise everyone from across the Border cricket sphere for their good work over the past season tomorrow night.

Also happening tomorrow will be Border Cricket’s annual golf day which will take place at the East London Golf Club.

Players, coaches and invited guests will be taking part while anyone interested to come and meet Border cricket’s current and past stars are encouraged to play as well on the day.

If you are interested in playing at tomorrow’s golf day contact Border Cricket on 043 709 9710 and join what should be a fun day of golf.
