Border to raise funds to help empower youngsters

A change of the willow for steel is on the cards with Border Cricket hosting a golf day at the East London Golf Club tomorrow.

The day is being held as a fund-raiser, so that Border Cricket, who are a non-profit organisation, can use the proceeds to help with their various development projects, chief among them, making sure they get their cricket academy up and running.

“We have struggled in the past with the attempts to get our academy off the ground,” said Border chief executive Thando Booi.

“But this year we have a partnership with CSA and with part of the funds we will look to use to identify talent and make sure that they are well looked after and receive the necessary support.

“Previously we have not been able to accommodate players, due to lack of funds, and many had only been able to attend day sessions, but now we will be able to get a proper academy running.”

Also of importance will be that the players are enrolled in university to continue their studies so that they have the tools to succeed after cricket and Border will be looking to cover these costs as well.

“Tuition is very important for us and we will be partnering with various tertiary institutions in East London so that the players receive the best possible education they can receive,” said Booi.

“The idea is to develop a well groomed and well-rounded cricketer in the sense that they perform on the field of play but also academically, so we need to support them so that they can start preparing now for life after cricket.”

As well as investing these funds in their academy and other cricket structures Border will also be looking to donate a portion of the funds to other charities so that they can give back to the community.

“In the end the money generated from this golf day will be ploughed back in the development of our cricketers which includes, coaching, courses, education and our Academy,” Booi explained.

“We have also identified a certain percentage of these funds that we will donate towards various charities in an effort to give back to the community.”

The golf day is expected to become a yearly occurrence and players are expected to be involved in the day, playing alongside everyone else.

“As this is our first golf day we are still finding our feet in how it is all organised and I think that next year we will be in a much better position to cover everything,” said Booi.

Tee-off is expected to get under way from around 11.30am tomorrow.
