Chiefs’ last chance

WHAT promised to be one of the best seasons for Kaizer Chiefs now seems likely to be a damp squib.

Glory beckoned barely two months ago with the PSL title and the Nedbank Cup seemingly en-route to Naturena, until an inexplicable dip in form.

It’s there for all to see that they’ve basically lost their grip on the PSL trophy.

They now need to win the cup to have something to show for the season, given that Mamelodi Sundowns have all but won the PSL title.

It is for this reason that they are expected to tread with great caution when they face Bidvest Wits in the semifinals of this tournament at the Milpark Stadium this afternoon.

But Chiefs are showing disturbing signs of lack of direction. This could make them perfect sitting targets for the home side, who are hungry for success and glory.

There can be no guarantees after a 1-1 draw with Free State Stars on Wednesday and a 1-0 loss to rookies Mpumalanga Aces a few days earlier.

“At some stage we were cruising merrily and all of a sudden it has become an uphill task for us,” said Chiefs assistant coach Doctor Khumalo.

“But we have come a long way to give up now. It’s not easy to concentrate on both the league and the cup but we will go flat out and give them no respite.”

Defeat against the Students today will put more pressure on Chiefs and highlight their problems starting at the front.

The country’s leading goal scorer Bernard Parker has been firing blanks since February this year. Zimbabwean international Knowledge Musona is out with an ankle injury for the rest of the season.

Wits’ game centres on highly gifted midfielder Jabulane Shongwe who sprays passes to the likes of Sibusiso Vilakazi and S’thembiso Ngcobo who should be a handful for his former team mates.

Coach Gavin Hunt expects his classy midfielder, Papy Faty, to pass a late fitness test before the game.

“We are ready and look forward to this clash,” he said.
