Chilli Boys must burn Arrows

Chippa United’s fight to maintain their position in the Premier Soccer League top eight continues, despite them picking up four points in their last two games.

Chippa hammered Platinum Stars 4-1 and that was followed by a 1-1 draw against second-placed Bidvest Wits at the weekend.

However, the Port Elizabeth-based side’s biggest test will be this weekend when they host Golden Arrows at East London’s Buffalo City Stadium on Saturday (kick-off at 3pm).

A win against Arrows on Saturday and draws in their final two fixtures against Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is likely to guarantee the Bay side a spot in the top eight.

Chippa coach Dan “Dance” Malesela believes it would be the ideal platform from which to work next season.

“We’ll try and hold onto the top eight position,” he said after their draw against Wits.

“A top eight finish is a little history we will make at the club. That’s how we’ll build a legacy and good things for the future.”

Chippa’s recent good run came after going through a dry spell of playing five games without a win.

They are currently placed seventh on the log with 38 points from 27 matches. They are just two points ahead of ninth-placed Durban side Arrows, otherwise known as Abafana Bes’thende.

The Chilli Boys have stepped up their game in their second year in top-flight football compared to last season.

At this stage last season, Chippa had a black cloud hanging over them in trying to survive being relegated from the Premier League.

With the help of Malesela, Chippa have been a force to be reckoned with this season.
