Chippa end season on a high

Chippa United head coach Dan “Dance” Malesela will be chasing bigger and better results next season after finishing the 2015-16 Premier Soccer League on a high note at the weekend.

Chippa closed their campaign with a fantastic 2-0 victory over Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs in their final league fixture at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The win comes shortly after Chippa beat another Soweto Goliath, Orlando Pirates, by the same margin in their previous league fixture.

On Saturday, goals from Buyani Sali and Lerato Manzani saw the Port Elizabeth-based side clinch their first-ever league victory over the Glamour Boys.

The win secured a sixth-place finish for Chippa, which is the team’s highest finish in the league.

A top-eight finish also qualifies the club for the lucrative MTN8 Cup competition, which is another first for Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi’s team.

Ahead of the game, the Chilli Boys coach said beating two Soweto giant teams back-to-back would be a great way to end the season – and the former Pirates and Manning Rangers skipper has managed to do just that.

Speaking to the media after the game, Malesela said: “It’s a good ending to the season. All credit must go to everybody at the club. I do not want to single anybody out.

“We are building something for the future and hopefully we will get it right in the new season as well.

“It’s the beginning of a small history that we are creating at the club. We have to open history books at Chippa United and not fight for relegation.

“So this is the beginning of a chapter that we are opening up.”

The match against Amakhosi was Chilli Boys’ captain James Okwuosa’s last for the club.

The 25-year-old defender last week confirmed that he will not be with the team next season.

Malesela said it was sad to see Okwuosa leave the team.

Meanwhile, the loss for Chiefs saw them finish fifth on the log, just ahead of Chippa.

Coach Steve Komphela congratulated Chippa on their outstanding performance.

He said he was happy that the season had finally come to an end.

“They played a nice game, good energy, nice movement, good technique, nice attitude. They wanted it,” Komphela said.

“Where we could hardly put our foot, they put their head ... that’s commitment.

“As for us, there is nice work left and nice work to be done. I am happy it’s over so we going to start properly.

“The hunger that I have is just to go and get a team that has energy. Our team must play with more energy.

“Anybody with energy has respect. We just need to get the respect back.”
