Brazilians can samba

PITSO Mosimane could have the luxury of sitting back and watching title rivals Kaizer Chiefs play catch-up in the coming week if Mamelodi Sundowns beat Moroka Swallows this evening.

And with the Dube Birds regular slouches this season, Mosimane might be granted his wish when his side travels to the non-intimidating Dobsonville Stadium.

Chiefs have CAF Confederations Cup commitments against Ivory Coast’s Asec Mimosas at the same venue a day later, giving the Brazilians a chance to remain top of the Absa Premiership table six points clear, but having played two games more than Amakhosi, who are second on the table.

“I think we are going for a record,” said Mosimane, referring to the number of points that could win the title after a 1-0 victory against MP Black Aces pushed Sundowns up to 58 points.

But with three games remaining, no team will reach that milestone, held by the Brazilians when they clinched the Premier League with 75 points in the 1999-2000 campaign.

The only record they could equal and that is within their grasp is the number of consecutive wins in league games, which is 11. Sundowns hold that landmark.

Should Mosimane mastermind another win tonight, then his counterpart Stuart Baxter will have his work cut out.

“I will be happy to have three more points against Swallows and watch because the next couple of weeks are not going to be easy.

“There are few games to play now and when you win your games you are in a favourable position.

“At one stage I was 11 points behind and for me to come and catch up was difficult,” said Mosimane.

“And again at one stage I was six points ahead and they caught up. Football is a funny game.”

On the night Sundowns narrowly beat Aces, Swallows slumped to their 13th defeat of the season against Bidvest Wits and failed to move up the standings, where they are fourth from bottom. However, Mosimane said he would not underestimate a team he’s only managed to beat once in four league encounters.

Aces coach Clive Barker, now firmly concentrating on staying in the Top 8 bracket, tipped Chiefs for the title “because of their experience in winning titles”.

Barker’s former team, Wits, are also still in with a chance to win the Premier, but only if log leaders Sundowns and second-place Chiefs drop points along the way. The Clever Boys host Amakhosi on Wednesday.
