Exciting East London sports project launches

Community sport is set to get a major fillip in Mdantsane tomorrow as the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) launches its one-stop-sports-programme in partnership with Winter Rose precinct.

The launch is aimed at reviving community sport activities in Mdantsane by utilising the Winter Rose precinct as a hub.

“This innovative one-stop-sport-programme will be rolled out to other districts mainly to encourage learners to participate actively in sport whilst being mentored by established sport hubs,” said MEC Pemmy Majodina.

“This model further offers diversity of sporting codes and recreational activities for both in and out of school youths and adults, therefore creating footprints of excellence through the delivery of quality programmes bringing about positive social change.”

Adding to the launch is that the Winter Rose club has been recognised as strategically positioned to be a centre for linking schools to club, which is to ensure there is a well-coordinated and systematic approach to the delivery of school sport in Mdantsane.

The linking of schools to the club is envisaged to enhance the smooth transition of participants between school and community sport.

Around 1200 learners from surrounding schools in Mdantsane will be taking part in the inaugural event.

Schools such as Nowonga, Nobotwe, Fikile Gaushe, Isibane, all Junior Primary, Fanti Gaqa, Dalukukhanya, Gcobani, Luzuko, Sakhile, Nkululeko, Senior Primary and Sakhisizwe, Sandisiwe, Mzomhle, Nyameko, Philemon Ngcelwane, Valamazibuko, Loyiso High schools will be part of the launch.

A whole host of sport codes will be played at the event with soccer, rugby, cricket, netball, athletics, modified sports activities and junior sport all on the agenda.

The feast of activities for the day will begin with a 3km walk from the precinct at 8am and will then be followed by aerobics, water sport, tag rugby and junior sports.

Former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs soccer star Jabulani Mendu will also be in attendance on the day and this should bring much excitement to the young budding sporting talents.

It is all geared up to be a full day of fun sporting action for the kids.

The event will be getting under way at Winter Rose Precinct (Stadium), Mdantsane NU13 at 8am tomorrow morning and the activities should be concluded by 2pm.
