One last training session will be held by the Border semi-professional cricket team in Bloemfontein today as they prepare for tomorrow’s Cricket South Africa (CSA) Provincial One-Day Competition final against Free State.

It is almost a carbon copy of the 2012-13 season when Border and Free State met in the final of the ODI competition in Bloemfontein, and on that occasion Border came out on top, winning their first piece of ODI silverware.

Five players who played in that final, namely Lundi Mbane, Burton de Wett, Abongile Sodumo, Darryl Brown and Jerry Nqolo, are part of the 13-man Border squad tasked with the assault on this year’s competition.

In the 2012-13 final Border’s bowlers were the stars bowling Free State all out for a below par 207 runs, that Border’s batsmen then made heavy weather chasing down for the loss of seven wickets with 27 balls to spare.

Brown was arguably the star performer claiming 2/38 off his 10 overs with the ball and then contributing 43 not out with the bat to help lead the team to victory.

Mbane’s 4/36 in 9.5 overs and Sodumo’s solid captaincy were also very important parts of the team’s victory.

These five players will be looked upon to use their considerable knowledge and experience of playing in and winning a final to guide the rest of the team through tomorrow’s match.

With Sodumo at the helm Border will have an experienced, calm head behind the stumps directing play and he will want to make sure his charges execute the game plan perfectly.

Border coach Frank Plaatjes believes the best thing his team can do is to not over think things and do the basics right.

“We need to stick to the basics and just keep it simple,” said Plaatjes.

“The last thing we want to do is over think things, so the plan is to just get the basics right and stick to the plan.”

Border’s bowlers have enjoyed a good season in all formats of the game and will be looked upon to impress in tomorrow’s final.

Border’s batsmen, although inconsistent in the longer format, have largely performed well on the limited-overs side, especially when chasing a target, with multiple big hitters in their stable.

“Our bowlers have always been good, and we have some big hitters in our batting lineup,” said Plaatjes.

“Whether we bowl or bat first we are prepared for it.”

A good all-round performance will be needed if Border are to make it two ODI trophies in three seasons.

With the cricket season coming to an end, Border will want to end with some silverware that will give them a boost going into next season.

Following the final Border will be involved in the annual T20 tournament that will then end their season.

Tomorrow’s match gets under way at 9.30am.
