The compendium of races that make up an afternoon of high energy activity out at Lilyfontein attracted yet another record field of well over 2000 participants.

Sponsored by Red Barron Tomatoes the annual Tomato Trot is a major talking point across communities and 2016 did not disappoint.

The 15km run results possibly told a fair bit more about who was not there rather than who was in respect of the men, while the women’s results were more reflective of current standards.

Bulelani Mgubu was a first-time winner in the men’s race, while past winner, Zingisile Marikeni, was forced into submission and chased by Simphiwe Majiki.

Hanlie Botha has been outracing every weekend and has dominated every race. She again won comfortably on the dusty hills around Brakfontein. Her clubmate Stephanie Smith, who was second at the Bridle Drift half-marathon recently, was away in Port Elizabeth where she came in first overall (male and female) at the fast PE Hobie Beach parkrun.

Second was Andrea Ranger, who has also been at full-tilt for four weeks in a row. Third was Ingrid Webber, who appears to be on song for another good ultra-marathon in the months ahead.

The 55km cycle saw Jason Peach, a great all rounder, pedal to victory ahead of Michael Pedersen and Liam Graham.

Liam Venter and Robyn Emslie led the men’s and women’s divisions in the 35km cycle respectively.

In the popular 15km Cameron Luckhoff and Meghan Coltman took line honours.

At least one cyclist/runner completed both the 15km cycle and run.
